Looking for love online? Stay Alert!
Every day, people turn to social media and online dating sites hoping to find meaningful connections. Unfortunately, not everyone you meet online has good intentions. Romance scams are on the rise, and they can cost victims more than just heartache.

What is a Romance Scam?
A romance scam happens when fraudsters create fake profiles on dating sites or on social media to build trust and form an online relationship. Once they gain your confidence, they often share dramatic or plausible stories, such as needing money to visit you, escape a difficult situation, or have health or legal issues in order to convince you to send your own money to them or receive money that ends up being fraudulent or stolen funds.

Red Flags:
  • Poor grammar
  • Inability to meet in person or frequent cancellations
  • Expresses love quickly
  • Claims to live/work overseas or out of state
How to Stay Safe:
  • Think before you share. Be cautious about what you post online. Scammers use personal details to manipulate you and appear more legitimate.

  • Use reputable platforms. Even trusted dating and social media sites can be targeted by fraudsters.

  • Watch for payment requests. If someone requests money, they often recommend methods that are difficult to reverse, such as wire transfers, gift cards, or person to person platforms.

  • Never send money to someone you haven’t met in person.
